CVC Words {Read it! Build it! Write it!}

I am so excited to show you a new activity I made for my kindergarten students, to help them read and write CVC words.

Read it! Build it! Write it! {CVC Words Edition}

This activity does not require any copies!
Just print, laminate, and cut out the CVC word cards.
Each card contains one word for the children to learn and practice.

First, students read the CVC word. I included dots for the children to touch, which will help them blend the sounds together. Then, they use letter tiles or beads, to spell the word.

Finally, they use a dry erase marker to practice writing the word.

There are many, many CVC word cards included. Just about every word I could possibly think of! For the next several weeks, we will be working on short o, so all my short o cards are out at my word work station. The children are really loving them!

My kindergarten students have been working hard at reading and writing CVC words, blending and segmenting words, and counting the number of syllables in words.

  10. Our team just order the magnetic ten frame paddles like these - but I love these, too. We work on sound segmenting in class a lot with manipulatives. I've found that touching counters or moving pieces really helps the students break the words into sounds and to put the sounds together.

  15. The magnetic boards would be great to use with my kindergarten Title I students. Many of them are getting mixed up with syllables and segmenting sounds in words now that we have been segmenting and blending. They are unable to hear and say words in syllables. How do you help your students to know the difference between the two skills?

    1. Lee Ann,

      I have the same issue now that I have introduced both segmenting and counting syllables. I tell them that segmenting counts ALL the sounds and when we count syllables, we are counting word parts. The more we practice the difference, the better they are at telling the difference.

  17. These are great. I work with small groups as an instructional aide and these would be perfect for giving every student and opportunity to sound out words at the same time and still be able to tell who is really getting it and who is just following along.
