Sight Word Sentences

Looking for fun and engaging ways for your students to learn and practice their sight words on a daily basis?

These sight word sentence writing sheets include 151 different sight words. You'll find the Primer, Pre-Primer, and First Hundred Fry Words, and words included in most sight word programs in kindergarten.

These sheets were created to help young learners gain confidence in writing proper sentences, while practicing their sight words. They contain just the right amount of support for beginning writers to be successful.

Students read the title and use the title as a sentence starter to write four sentences. Each sentence should use the highlighted sight word. Students use the words in the illustrated word bank in their sentences.

If you take advantage of teachable moments, such as using a/an correctly, subject/verb agreement, discussing the various parts of speech, and proper use of punctuation, you can REALLY MAXIMIZE LEARNING!

Once you have modeled how to complete a few of these sentence writing sheets, students should be able to complete them independently. It's so hard to find activities that young learners can complete on their own. Not anymore!

These are great for morning work, centers, assessments, interventions, homework, substitute teachers, and more!

In addition to completing these sight word activity sheets, students can also build these sentences in a pocket chart.

The same sight words and sentences are included in this resource. Instead of writing the sentences, students build them in a pocket chart. They read the sentences six times, each time using a different picture/word card.

Once you move to a new lesson, keep the cards from previous lessons available for students to assemble. Since they are all numbered, it will be easy to keep them organized.

By combining these two resources, you will REALLY MAXIMIZE LEARNING! Students will gain so much confidence and knowledge as they read and write sentences every day.

Even if you don't formally teach all of the 148 sight words included in these resources, you can still keep the sheets and pocket charts available for those students who are ready and able to learn more. We all have those high flyers who crave learning as much as they can, right?

Early Literacy Practice Pages

Do you have students who need help with some early literacy skills? Or students who have mastered most of the skills, but have some difficulty following directions, so they often answer questions wrong, even though they understand the concept?

I do! I do!

I needed a way for them to practice general readiness, phonemic awareness, phonics, and structural analysis skills, so they would feel more confident when taking tests and learn to analyze directions so they didn't get questions wrong because they weren't paying attention to the key words in the questions.

So, I came up with these early literacy practice pages.

I've been using them in small groups and they are really helping students to think about what the questions are asking and to look at each answer choice carefully. Many of them contain answer choices that are similar and look correct.

Here are all the skills included...

Most of the skills contain 2 different activity sheets, and there are some that contain more. Blends has 3 different sheets, mixed review has 4, and word families has 5 different sheets.

Here is an example of one of the sheets. See how some of the wrong answers look like they could be right, if you don't pay close attention to the question?

  

This one is all about rhyming. I came up with quite a few different ways to test the children's understanding of rhyming.

When I complete a sheet with an individual or small group, we go very slowly. I help the children read the questions and identify the pictures with them. These sheets were not created for children to complete independently. So many teachable moments would be missed!

Once an answer has been chosen, we discuss why it is the right (or wrong) answer. It is very interesting, and very telling, to hear the children explain why they chose an answer. It is during this conversation that children usually figure out if they chose the wrong answer. I tell them that they fell for my trickery and to be super careful not to let that happen. They love the challenge!

Answer keys are included for teachers to refer to. I highly suggest using it because it will tell you what each picture depicts, just in case you can't figure it out on your own.

Interactive Notebooks in Kindergarten? You bet!

I am a HUGE advocate of using interactive notebooks. I've written numerous blog posts about what a valuable learning tool they are and how engaged my students are while working in their notebooks. Click here to see my previous blog posts.

But, no matter how many times I tell other teachers how wonderful they are, a lot of kindergarten teachers still feel hesitant about incorporating them in their classroom because of all the cutting and gluing involved. And, rightfully so. If you use activities with lots of small pieces to cut and glue, then I would be turned off too.

When searching for interactive notebook activities for our youngest learners, it is very important that you find ones that do not have a lot of cutting and gluing. 

I created phonics and sight word interactive notebook activities for my kindergarten students last year, and used them very successfully in my kindergarten classroom. I purposely created activities that do not have too much cutting.

Even though the activities I created do not have a ton of cutting and gluing, I have talked to some teachers who are still hesitant to use interactive notebooks because ANY amount of cutting and gluing turns them off.

To help sway my teacher friends to take the plunge, I added to my existing activities, a whole bunch of JUST ONE CUT activities. That's it! JUST ONE CUT! After the children complete the fun activity, there is JUST ONE CUT and then they glue the sheet into their notebook.

See the BIG dotted line around the label and activity? That's the only cut the children need to make. No small pieces and no intricate cutting.

There's no doubt that flaps and foldables are engaging and exciting. But now you have a choice. On days you are pushed for time, an activity with just one cut may be all you have time for. I recommend mixing it up and doing flaps and foldables on some days and the just one cut activities on other days. 

All the skills in my Kindergarten Phonics Interactive Notebook Activities pack contain activities with just one cut and with a few cuts. Just pick and choose what you have time for. You can also differentiate if your students are working on these activities independently. Those who can handle a little more cutting and gluing can do the activities with multiple cuts and those who can't, can do the activities with just one cut. You can even let the students decide which activity to complete.

Now, there's no excuse not to jump on the interactive notebook bandwagon! 

Too much cutting? Problem solved!
