Showing My Understanding Magnetic Display

One of my favorite educational supply companies is Teacher Created Resources. Recently, they contacted me and asked me if I wanted to try out some of their magnetic labels. I jumped at the chance, of course!

Right away, I knew what I wanted to do with them.

I use the Marzano scales to check for understanding. I decided this year that I was going to use the scales predominately to access my students' understanding of the weekly phonics skill(s).

Up until I had these magnets, we were doing frequent heart checks. I would tell my students the learning goal for the week and articulate the specific target goals for each score. Then, my students would hold up 1, 2, 3, or 4 fingers. This was working well, but once I saw these magnets, I knew they would make a wonderful addition to my showing my understanding anchor chart.

This picture shows part of my focus wall. On the bottom of the picture, you can see my showing my understanding anchor chart. I labeled each magnet with my students' names.

Now, after I articulate each target goal, my students place their magnet under the score that best describes their ability at that moment in time. My target goals are very specific to the skill being taught, so my students know exactly where they score.

Here are some close-ups!

I love how this display is very accessible to the children, as it allows them to move their magnet when they feel they are ready to move to the next score. The children enjoy being in charge of their learning and monitoring themselves as the week goes on. This display makes it very easy for me to help track my students' progress, give extra help, if needed, and celebrate success.

If you are interested in purchasing these magnets for your classroom, you can find them here. They come 30 to a pack. You can use the rest for other things, like I do! They are easy to write on and wipe off, and the magnet is powerful.

If you are interested in my showing my understanding anchor chart, just leave a comment, with your email (or email me!) and I'll send it to you.

  22. LOVE the signs!! We also use Marzano for our evaluation system. I'd love to see how you prepare for your formal evaluation(s) and how your school/district implements learning goals and scales. There is a lot of wiggle room in our district right now, so I'd love to see a blog post from you if you're planning on doing one!! :)

  33. I would love a copy also. I am still having a hard time having kids display their names when some will fall into the one scale quite frequently. How do you deal with that? penpup2@gmail.com

    1. I definitely understand your thinking! I had a long talk with my students and explained that the scales are just for them and for me. And not to worry about where everyone else is. And I went on and on. They seemed to understand what I was saying and take it to heart. I have several low kids and they have no problem putting themselves as a 1 or 2. You could always put numbers on the magnets, instead. Or have everyone choose a different word to put on their magnet. If I had the type of class who would tease each other, I wouldn't make it so public. I used to use labeled strips and my students would put on a clothespin and then I would collect them. It worked well, but this display is way more fun for the children and much easier to keep referring to.

  36. I WAS against Marzano at first, mainly because our county made it mandatory and told us we had to do it certain ways. When my principal allowed us to utilize scales & goals the way we enjoy it, THEN I understood the importance behind it! Love what you did here! My 3rd graders were shy about being completely honest in front of the whole class, so we used small dice that they could hide as I checked and walked around.

  56. My school also uses the Marzano scale, so I would love a copy of these. I also have a couple questions for you and the other teachers out there: Since I don't have a magnetic whiteboard, nor are clothespins easy to find where I am (Colombia), what is another way you would recommend using these besides having kids keep resticking tape to our brick walls (and it constantly falling off). Second, as another teacher mentioned, I'm a bit concerned with having this so public since some kids will inevitably always be in a lower spectrum. We frequently discuss how we all have different strengths, and I encourage honest reflection (for those kids that always think they're higher), but how do you manage this in your rooms? Thanks! 1. If you read a few comments before you, someone mentions a great idea using dice! That could work for you! Also, I replied to someone who commented before you about how I introduce this to my class and how I keep them from saying anything about those who put themselves in the lower scales. I hope it helps you!
