Writing Samples and a 100 Day Freebie!

I find inventive spelling so amusing! This week, in kindergarten, we finished up our Mitten and Hat unit. After completing a Venn diagram, comparing and contrasting both stories, my students were asked to write a sentence about one of the similarities between both stories. Here are some of them:

How cute are these?! I can read their writing all day long. Oh, wait! I do! LOL!

My first graders also did a unit on The Hat and The Mitten. One of their assessments was to write an opinion essay about which book was their favorite. They needed a thesis statement, 2-3 reasons why the story was their favorite, and, a conclusion.

(the second page said "awesome.")

(The second page said "I ever heard!")

For the rest of this week, we'll be celebrating the 100th Day of  School. My students will be writing about what they'll look like when they are 100 years old. These always come out cute! This is the writing template they'll be using:

    1. I always tell my students that since I read so many of their stories all week long, they must amuse me when they write. Most of them listen!

  2. Oh my word! Their writing pieces are fantastic. I wish my kinder kiddos were writing like that at this time. I have a few that are really getting the sentence structure but then I have a handful that are still stringing random letters. So frustrating. What writing curriculum do you use? How do you run your writing time? I'm always looking for new ideas/approaches for writing.

    1. Erin,

I use CraftPlus Writing as the basis of my writing program. But, I supplement a lot. I model all the time and challenge my students to write a proper sentence. They love to rise to the challenge. My writing time always begins with a short mini lesson and modeled writing activity. Then, I let them have at it during the Quiet 10. Finally, we meet again and share.

Thank you for sharing your 100 day writing ideas... I'm in Australia and we don't actually celebrate 100 days (I'm thinking of starting it in my class though, so many awesome ideas for it!) but this set will be perfect for our History theme on past/present/future!
